2005-2006 Work Plan

 

As a group we generally agreed that advocacy for the professional of school counseling, education about the development of a comprehensive school counseling program and development of students and young professionals in school counseling were our primary focuses for this coming year. In regards to these broad goals the following people agree to development a specific work plan to address the related goals identified below and to implement this plan:

 

Advocacy: Leslie Nemmers, Rebecca Droessler, Colleen McDonald, and Alan Burkard;

Education: Jennifer Betters, Steve Schneider, Chris Benyousky, Wendy Wall, Ann Jennerman, and Henry Smith; this group will work in collaboration with Gary Spears;

Student and Young Professional Development: Nancy Wilcox, Karen Steindorf, Paul Priester, and Tabitha Menning.

 Items that must be completed.

High priority goals.

  1. To promote professional development of school counselors and graduate students in training.

 Annually completed:

    1. Hold the 2006 WSCA annual conference.
    2. Hold WSCA graduate classes at the WSCA annual conference.
    3. Hold the 2005-2006 WSCA LDI.
    4. Maintain WSCAlink.
    5. Support the revision of the Wisconsin Developmental Guidance Model.
    6. Continue to publish the Counsellink on a quarterly schedule.
    7. Continue to recognize outstanding school counselor service at the WSCA annual conference.
    8. Continue to work with DPI toward the resolution and/or completion of the Pupil Services Role Delineation Project.
    9. Provide free WSCA membership to first year school counseling graduate students.

New items identified for this year:

    1. Provide workshops, in collaboration with CESAs, on the use of data in the development and maintenance of a school counseling program (address other components of school counseling as well). Members working on these goals: Jennifer Betters, Steve Schneider, Chris Benyousky, Wendy Wall, Ann Jennerman, and Henry Smith; this group will work in collaboration with Gary Spears.
    2. Promote the ASCA webinars.
    3. Recruit new graduate student members in school counseling by outreach to university and college programs.
    4. Develop a subcommittee of graduate students for the purpose of voicing their concerns and to learn from counselors in the field.
    5. Increase graduate student involvement at the conference.
    6. Could an outstanding graduate student also be recognized? This could be a way to promote graduate student interest and commitment.
    7. Promote ASCA membership among WSCA members.

Long-range items:

    1. Provide workshops in collaboration with CESAs on how to develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program. Members working on these goals: Jennifer Betters, Steve Schneider, Chris Benyousky, Wendy Wall, Ann Jennerman, and Henry Smith; this group will work in collaboration with Gary Spears.
    2. Develop a graduate student workshop that is to be offered the Wednesday prior to the WSCA annual conference. Student and Young Professional Development: Nancy Wilcox, Karen Steindorf, Paul Priester, and Tabitha Menning.
    3. Develop School Counselor summer academies.
    4. Recognize outstanding comprehensive school counseling programs at annual conference
  1. To promote effective communication and action among other professionals, individuals, and organizations concerned with children.

 

Annually completed:

    1. Continue to send a WSCA representative to WCA executive board meetings and maintain membership on the executive board.
    2. Continue to send a WSCA representative to WAPSO meetings.

New items identified for this year:

    1. Increase representation at other association conferences (e.g., careers conference, superintendent’s conference, school board, WEAC) through staffing a booth or presenting on school counseling. (Identify two groups to reach this year). Members working on these goals: Leslie Nemmers, Rebecca Droessler, Colleen McDonald, and Alan Burkard.  (WASB Jan 18-20 in Milwaukee, WI; WASDA Sept 21-22 in Madison; AWSA Oct. 26-28 in the Wisconsin Dells; PTA Sept 30 in Racine).
    2. Develop a professional display on school counseling that can be taken to conferences.
    3. Make a connection with Early & Ongoing Collaboration and Assistance (EOCA) and promote (focus is on developing equity in schools).  (See:http://www.dpi.state.wi.us/dpi/dlsea/een/eoca.html).
  1. To address issues of concern to and advocate for students.

Annually completed:

    1. Develop and post developmental guidance lesson plans on WSCA website and in Counsellink.
    2. Develop links on website.
    3. Provide scholarships to students for post-secondary education.
    4. Seek to endorse/sponsor important programs (i.e., No Name Calling Week).

New items identified for this year:

    1. Update website to include relevant information (i.e., lesson plans, comprehensive guidance). Members working on these goals: Jennifer Betters, Steve Schneider, Chris Benyousky, Wendy Wall, Ann Jennerman, and Henry Smith; this group will work in collaboration with Gary Spears.
    2. Identify and work with legislators on the bullying program/initiative in the state.
  1. To give direction to issues of concern to school counselors and promote and advocate for the profession of school counseling.

 

Annually completed:

    1. Maintain a liaison relationship with DPI school counseling consultant.
    2. Continue to write letters of CESA contact list on legislative matters.
    3. Maintain email tree that reaches counselors in Wisconsin to provide legislation alerts and initiate legislative action
    1. Maintain partnership with WEAC.

New items identified for this year:

    1. Work legislatively toward making “Standard E” specific to school counseling. Members working on these goals: Leslie Nemmers, Rebecca Droessler, Colleen McDonald, and Alan Burkard.
    2. Present at the superintendent’s state conference on school counseling (i.e., the affect that school counselors can have upon student and school achievement). Members working on these goals: Leslie Nemmers, Rebecca Droessler, Colleen McDonald, and Alan Burkard.
    3. Develop a brochure on school counseling programs regarding the importance of school counselors and school counseling programs. Members working on these goals: Leslie Nemmers, Rebecca Droessler, Colleen McDonald, and Alan Burkard.
    4. Work with WEAC newsletter to develop an article on school counseling (in partial response to the school psychologist letter that was published in the spring of 2005). Members working on these goals: Leslie Nemmers, Rebecca Droessler, Colleen McDonald, and Alan Burkard.
    5. Begin to review ASCA position statements and either adopt or develop our own statements. Members working on these goals: Jennifer Betters, Steve Schneider, Chris Benyousky, Wendy Wall, Ann Jennerman, and Henry Smith; this group will work in collaboration with Gary Spears.
    6. Send a letter to all districts notifying the districts of financial impact of state statue 115.88 for their schools.
    7. Develop a public relations toolkit for National School Counselor’s week.
    8. Facilitate post-card writing to legislators at WSCA conference.
    9. Review the “Reorganization/Restructuring” workplan. 

Long-range items:

    1. Initiate legislation to address reimbursement of school counselors for special education services on a permanent basis.
    2. Promote school counseling through meeting with superintendents and/ or assistant superintendents.
  1. To foster closer professional and personal relationships among school counselors.

Annually completed:

    1. Continue to provide social activities (i.e., Afterglow, president’s reception) at the WSCA annual conference.
    2. Continue to maintain the WSCA Store at the WSCA annual conference.

 

New items identified for this year:

    1. Develop a list of individuals who are knowledgeable on a specific topic and make this information available to members. Members working on these goals: Nancy Wilcox, Karen Steindorf, Paul Priester, and Tabitha Menning.
    2. Develop mentoring relationships with new school counseling professionals. Members working on these goals:  Nancy Wilcox, Karen Steindorf, Paul Priester, and Tabitha Menning.
    3. Promote the attendance of CESA trainings on the Professional Development Plans.
    4. Provide a social at the annual WSCA conference for retirees and new graduate student members.
