Leadership through Accountability

WSCA’s 2nd Summer Leadership Academy on July 31st

There has been so much professional activity generated by the renewed movement towards comprehensive school counseling programs in recent years. There is a real sense in the air that school counselors in the state of Wisconsin are gaining momentum towards not only having a significant impact on the success of our students, but also being able to provide substantial evidence of that impact.

At a time when many schools are looking into reform movements, it is critical that school counselors take a leadership role in helping institute systemic change. The American School Counselor Association indicates that leadership is one of primary themes surrounding the National Model.   Being accountable for our leadership role can be a challenge. However, most educators concur that accountability is a shared concern and a shared responsibility in which counselors, administrators, teachers and school staff all contribute to the comprehensive structure of school that focuses on curriculum, climate, teaching, and learning.

WSCA is pleased to sponsor the 2nd Summer Leadership Academy on Thursday, July 31st, at UW-Madison. Dr. Carolyn Stone will be presenting for the day, and will demonstrate an easy approach to implementing an accountable school counseling program to show how school counselors effectively impact student success and can report hard data to show how students are different because they have a school counselor. Data will be presented from school counseling programs that have used an accountability system to impact grades, test scores, higher education going rates, course enrollment patterns, and other measurable indicators of student success.

Dr. Stone has been a Counselor Educator at the University of North Florida since 1995 where she teaches and researches in the area of school counselors and accountability and legal and ethical issues. Prior to becoming a counselor educator, Dr. Stone spent 22 years with the Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida where she served as a middle school teacher, elementary and high school counselor and Supervisor of Guidance for 225 counselors. She is a past President of the Florida Counseling Association and the Florida Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors.
